“Precious because of its rarity, it must be cultivated with care”.
What is progress?
“The gradual self liberation from bondage to nature is the true progress of humanity” [Sri Aurobindo, Essay in philosophy and Yoga]
“A spiritual atmosphere is more important than the outer conditions; if one can get that and also create one’s own spiritual air to breathe in and live in it, that is the true condition of progress”. [Sri Aurobindo, Letters on Yoga]
Here the significance is clear: “Progress”. This garden, in its simple name, seems to gather the power aspects of all the previous gardens in one single dynamic movement forward – it is also itself a “Power”.
But contrary to the ‘collective’ of the previous garden, Utility, the Mother uses the word “rarity”. Here seems to be a link between the two gardens: the collective is made of individuals and evolve through “rare” forerunners…
“Heaven’s call is rare, rarer the heart that heads” [Sri Aurobindo, Savitri]
“Precious because of its rarity” suggests an individual progress, “a gradual self liberation from bondage to nature”, in other words, Yoga, “the noblest utility”.
What is Yoga but the mightiest power to progress to the highest?
“Yoga means union with the Divine” [Sri Aurobindo, SABCL, 24: 1149]
