Hibiscus: Usefulness of the New Creation

Garden of Progress

Mother’s comment

“A creation which aims at teaching men to surpass themselves”.

What is Utility?
“To enter into relation with God is Yoga, the supreme object and the noblest utility”. [Sri Aurobindo, SABCL, 17:12]

This one statement of Sri Aurobindo would be enough to sum up the Garden Utility. Yoga is par excellence and indisputably the most powerful way to surpass oneself.

But we may notice that Utility is the only garden where the Mother uses the plural, “men… themselves”. This garden is no more about individual progress, but about the “collective”.

“The object sought after is not an individual achievement of divine realisation for the sake of the individual, but something to be gained for the earth consciousness here…” [Letters on Yoga, I, p 100]

The Garden Utility was designed in 2024 and work began in early 2025.

Located between the Garden of Wealth and the Garden of Progress, this garden is designed with  5 square ponds and a larger water body crossed by a bridge-like pathway. The garden will be laid out with lawns. At the focal point there will be, as in all the gardens,  a large granite cube.
