Sri Aurobindo with the help of the Mother founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Pondicherry in 1926.
I am French by birth and early education, I am Indian by choice and predilection. In my consciousness there is no antagonism between the two, on the contrary, they combine very well and complete one another. I know also that I can be of service to both equally, for my only aim in life is to give a concrete form to Sri Aurobindo’s great teaching and in his teaching he reveals that all the nations are essentially one and meant to express the Divine Unity upon earth through an organised and harmonious diversity.
Sri Aurobindo Society was started by the Mother on 19th September 1960. She was only the founder and the Executive President.
Development of a township near Pondicherry, with all the amenities and facilities for residence and work for those who want to prepare for a better life.
The resolution of Sri Aurobindo Society to create a township near Pondicherry was approved by the Mother as it was published in Sri Aurobindo Society, Information letter NO. 7
“The Mother has taken up the model township project. She has named it “AUROVILLE”.”

The first record of Mother using the word “Matrimandir” dates from 7.2.68. (in an Auroville brochure). Till then, Mother referred also to it as “l’Oratoire de la Mère” in French and “The Mother’s shrine” in English.
One may wonder if this word was coined by Mother, or suggested by somebody else and that Mother took some time to adopt it.
Roger (the Chief Architect of Auroville) visited Auroville for the first time in 1967. Though, since September 1965, he believed that Mother had accepted having the centre of the town somewhere between the villages of Edayanchavadi, Kottakarai and Kuilapalayam, only very few small plots of land had been purchased in that area by the S.A.S. (Sri Aurobindo Society) – and Auroville’s Inauguration Ceremony should not be again postponed, which it would have to if at least some land hadn’t been purchased in the future area of Matrimandir.
Roger presents to Mother a map of the area and asks Her to point on it at the centre of the future town. She points at the crossroad of two existing dirt tracks on communal lands. He and others take a jeep and drive to this place where a large and lone Banyan Tree happened to be standing. They report this fact to Mother, who feels it is a good omen and is happy about it.
As the centre of the future town is now much closer than earlier expected from the villages of Edayanchavadi and Kottakarai, Roger and his team will decide to reduce the town’s diameter from 1.5km to 1.25km so that it doesn’t overlap these two villages.
